Hegarty’s November Auction features items from Kilbrittain & Blarney Castles!

17th century Turret Gun brought to Kilbrittain Castle circa 1700

Hegarty’s forthcoming auction will provide collectors with an opportunity to own an important of West Cork military history, when a turret gun from Kilbrittain Castle dating to late 1600’s will feature, with an estimate of €2500/5000. This turret gun, brought to Kilbrittain Castle by one of the Stawells circa 1700, was placed with others on a balcony over the door facing the sea. Concerning this turret gun, there is a record written by the late Maurice Healy of Bandon on July 26 1906 which is featured in historical records and documents, which will also be sold along with the cannon. Historical documents state that Anthony and Eustace Stawell of Kinsale, with other gentlemen took as a prize a small French frigate off the Coast of Kinsale, in the reign of Charles II, 1667. This was the year when England was at war with the French and Dutch and the Gentlemen on the south coast of Munster (with few exceptions) entered on a state of national defence for the protection of their properties and they seized every small ship belonging to the enemy when they got the opportunity. The historical documents state that Eustace Stawell got the guns, kept them in the family and his son Jonas Stawell brought them to Kilbrittain in or about 1700.

Also included in the auction of some 300 lots are items from Blarney Castle, along with contents from Haughton collection, a family collection amassed over five generation. Items of interest will be an Edwards & Roberts inlaid sideboard est. €1500/2500, a Georgian Irish foldover tea table est. €2000/4000, a Regency Irish foldover card table est. €1500/3000, a set of eight rosewood Victorian chairs on cabriole leg est. €1500/2500, a pair of very fine and rare library chairs est. €1400/1800, an Irish 18th century linen press est. €2000/4000, various inlaid Edwardian occasional furniture, drawing and bedroom furniture, a collection of 19th century English porcelain to include Worcester, Doulton, Royal Crown Derby, Wedgwood, Meissen etc., Irish & English 19th century silver, various collectables.

Featuring also will be a selection of books & document of historical interest. It promises to be an exciting and varied auction, so viewing should not be missed!
