More about the artist: William Clark (26 June 1803 – 11 November 1883) was a Scottish artist who specialised in the painting of ships or marine works.
The artist was born and lived all his life in Greenock, near Glasgow, he lived at various addresses in his home town, and he lived on the street seen on the artist’s label between 1841 & 1857.
He was the son of a seaman and later a customs officer. In 1835 he was invited to paint the regatta of the Royal Northern Yacht Club and was in 1838 elected to membership of the club. Clark lived during the heyday of shipbuilding on the Clyde and was kept busy with commissions from ship owners and masters, which ensured him a steady supply of work, and enabled him to remain close to his home town.
His work is held in the National Maritime Museum Greenwich, The McLean Museum in Greenock, and The Walker Art Gallery of Liverpool amongst others both at home and abroad.
