MONTHLY ART and ANTIQUES AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS – November 19th Sale

Old Schoolhouse Durrus, contents from which feature in this exciting sale.

Our November Art & Interiors Auction which will take place on Sunday the 19th of November and will see a wonderful mix of antique furniture, art from Ireland and beyond, jewellery, silver and glass coming to the market.

We are very pleased to include as part of our auction the life time collection of Roisin Russell decd., late of The Old School House Durrus, Co. Cork.

With a passion for artefacts and all things eclectic, Roisin Russell collected antiques, art and curiosities from around the globe for almost 60 years. Her story began as Irish immigrant in central Canada in the 1960’s, where she found a part time job in a used furniture store.

Buying trips to houses, farms and flea markets gave her an appetite to learn more about antiques, and soon her own Victorian farmhouse was furnished with interesting items, largely from Upper Canada and the Niagara escarpment. From snow shoes to Inuit carvings and kitchen implements, her diverse collections of Canadiana began to take shape.

A move west to British Columbia in the 70’s expanded her interests and opportunities. In British Columbia, Mrs Russell added NW Coast Indian masks, dugout canoes and Asian art to her collections. The volume grew, and soon she opened an antique store from which to sell them.

By 1980, Mrs Russell felt the call to return to Ireland, ultimately landing in West Cork, where she spent the remainder of her life. Much of the Canadian content returned with her, and in her spacious home, the collections grew to include Irish indigenous pottery, furniture and other fascinating artefacts.

Because of the diversity of her treasures, visitors would often remark that her home had a museum-like quality. Indeed, her kitchen was complete with grain vintage scoops, butter churns and a baker’s paddle, while the bathrooms housed antique curling tongs, spittoons and shaving items.
